About Surpresa Natural: Our Journey to High-Quality Dietary Supplements

What would you do if you suddenly were no longer allowed to eat any of your favourite foods?

That is exactly what happened to me.

My name is Rosemary Mellahn, and I am the founder of Surpresa Natural. I originally come from Cape Town, where I was fortunate enough to grow up surrounded by nature. Although I had always led a fairly healthy lifestyle, at the age of 40 I was diagnosed with various food intolerances. Unfortunately, these were also the root of some serious health problems. Suddenly I was no longer allowed to eat many of my daily favourites, including staple foods such as bread and eggs. This circumstance forced me to think far more seriously about my diet than before and to engage intensively with natural dietary supplements. At that point, however, I could not yet imagine how much this topic would soon captivate me.

How do you recognise good, high-quality dietary supplements?

The more I read, the clearer it became to me that the right dietary supplements can have a very positive effect on keeping the body healthy and supplied with energy – provided, of course, that the quality is right. But with millions of products on the market, finding them is not easy. I quickly discovered that many of the products were full of synthetic ingredients or contained unwanted additives – something that would never be an option for me as someone who lives as naturally as possible. On top of that, there was the dosage of the individual nutrients, which in my eyes was simply wrong in many products.

Better supplements were needed: The beginnings of Surpresa Natural

The desire took shape in me to create my own line of dietary supplements: they were to be completely natural, contain no unwanted additives or solvents, and consist of a particularly high proportion of natural, carefully selected raw materials.

It worked in my favour that my husband Kai had at that point already been active in the ingredients trade for over 25 years and gave me access to some of the world's leading manufacturers. And so together we began to bring our first products to market: natural magnesium as well as glucosamine and chondroitin. Demand was high, and more and more requests for new products followed. And so our product range grew steadily, always guided by the solutions the people around us were actually looking for.

Even though the wild nature of Portugal has since become our home, our Surpresa Natural products continue to be manufactured in Germany – always in accordance with international standards such as HACCP and GMP.
